An air of tradition
We have had such a lovely week with week, the highlight being helping Calum to make a sporran in a 1 2 1 workshop. The picture shows a prototype that Cathy made in advance of the workshop and if you want to see Calum’s finished piece, hop over to @catherineedwardsworkshop to check out the photos.
This got us interested in the history of the sporran, the sporran worn with a kilt, dates back to the 12th Century and evolved as a practical necessity for Highlanders who lacked pockets and the sporran served as a purse for food and personal items. The tassells on modern sporrans are often seen as a remnant of the drawstring closure of early sporrans.
Moving from Scotland to Ireland, on the 17th of March St Patrick’s day was celebrated, typical activities involved; eating of traditional food such as Irish stew, colcannon and soda bread, wearing green and Irish dancing.

For all the sky lovers out there, we have just had a total eclipse of the moon, which occurs when the earth is between the sun and the moon and the Earth’s casts it’s shadow onto the lunar surface.
For all the garden lovers out there, the daffodils are finally blooming. The flower has significance all around the world; in China it symbolises good fortune, in Japan the daffodil means joy and in France it is a sign of hope. Remember to gift them as a bunch as this means happiness but if you only give someone one it is supposed to mean misfortune!
