Variety is the spice of life....
Thank you to all who supported us during the open studios, you loved our kits and they flew out thick and fast! It so lovely to have such a varied job; running workshops in our own space and at other venues, having weekly leather workshops where people work on their own projects, fulfilling orders and adapting them to make them bespoke, fixing at the repair cafe and restoring your loved leather items. We currently have in the workshop a beautiful Mahjong game, whose leather case we are returning back to its former glory and a much- loved Sami bracelet whose fastener has broken and we are currently figuring out how best to fix it. No two days are ever the same and we are constantly meeting such lovely, interesting people.
Whilst pondering the fastener conundrum and having a peek at the ‘Everyday Nature’ (a great little book produced by the National Trust’), I read about how Velcro was invented which may seem more significant as you discover nature on your December walks.
At this time of year you may find that you have big burrs attaching to your clothing or your dog’s fur. The burdock seeds have detached from the dead stems that are still standing. In 1941, George de Mestral who was an engineer, experienced this when hunting in Switzerland in the Jura mountains. He then put the seeds under a microscope and years later created a new fastener called Velcro!
Before you start to think about all the Christmas food that you may be cooking, here are a couple of recipes that celebrate the season. As there are lots of delicious vegetables still around in the winter take advantage of this to follow this link to a winter coleslaw. Alternatively if it’s all about comfort, what is better than this link to a warming bowl of rice pudding.
If you are still stuck for Christmas ideas, we still have some reindeer decoration, key fob and plant hanger kits available and gift vouchers for sale, so please pop by and see us.
